Emiliano Martinez mocks Real Madrid star: “He screwed up everything”
Emiliano Martinez continued to mock the French players after Argentina beat them in the World Cup final. Martinez won the Qatar Golden Glove award after stellar performances in the Penalties against the Netherlands and France.
He has since celebrated his team’s victory by mocking France players, including waving a doll with Kylian Mbappe’s face on it, prompting some to describe him as “the most hated man in football”.
The Aston Villa star was still ecstatic with victory as he addressed the more than 100,000 people who had gathered in his hometown, Mar del Plata, to celebrate his achievement in winning the most expensive trophy in world football for his country.
Martinez touched on Tchouameni wasting the second penalty in the penalty shootout, and said sarcastically: “When I saved the first penalty kick in the final, I knew that the other boy (Tchouameni) would be very nervous.”
He added, “I tried to play him mentally by throwing the ball away and talking to him … and he missed the goal, spoiling everything.”
Martinez was widely criticized for throwing the ball wide before Tchouameni’s penalty and celebrated the resulting failure with a provocative dance, which he then repeated in front of his home crowd in Mar del Plata.
Apart from mocking France, the goalkeeper also continued to express his admiration for his teammate Lionel Messi, adding: “My last dream as a goalkeeper was to award the best in the world the World Cup title.”
He also spoke enthusiastically about the motivation behind Argentina’s victory, as he said: “In every match we played, we said we were playing for the people. When the legs can’t give, the heart always takes a step forward.
Martinez is expected to miss Aston Villa’s return to the Premier League on Sunday, and it is not yet known when he will return.
Despite his antics, the goalkeeper left the World Cup with his reputation greatly enhanced and Unai Emery’s side are likely to face a lot of interest in him from big clubs.
